Daily Prompt: Tourist Trap

What’s your dream tourist destination — either a place you’ve been and loved, or a place you’d love to visit? What about it speaks to you?

Photographers, artists, poets: show us VACATION.

Dictionary.reference.com’s  (first) definition of Vacation: a period of suspension of work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation, or travel; recess or holiday

There are four definitions listed for vacation. I don’t agree with any of them. To me a vacation is a place that makes you happy with everyone else around you. Whether it’s a spot in your hometown or a location a hundred miles away, if you’re unusually happy, it’s a vacation.

The best vacation I have ever been on (so far) was one with friends and family. The is a few hundred miles away from home but it’s worth every ounce of gasoline and stamina. It’s along the Lake Michigan coastline and it’s a wonderful location. The best thing about this place is that there is very little to do in the town itself other than lay on the beach and climb one of the lighthouses. The town is less than four square miles. When I was younger I’d travel there with my grandparents and spend about a week in our personal paradise. Once my grandmother died, Ludington whispered for me to visit again. Yes, my family and two friends vacationed there again that August after my grandmother died.

I absolutely love the simplicity of Ludington. It hasn’t changed too much over the years. It now has a Walmart and a Meijer but that’s about it. Watching the sunset and the sunrise while sitting on the pier is my favorite thing there. The vibrant pinks, purples, oranges, cadmium reds and yellows of the sunset and sunrise are gorgeous. The feel of hot sand under your feet as you look at the water ahead of you, unable to see across the vast lake is humbling. It’s as though I’ve never felt happiness until I’m there in Ludington.

But another place to vacation is within my hometown. Yes, it’s on a lake with different activities. It’s simple and nothing special. I can’t imagine not spending the day there at least once a week with friends and family.

Whether a vacation is near or far, it’s definitely a spot that speaks to you.
